At Burlington Capital, leadership extends beyond operations; it’s about shaping the future of the industry. John Sons, Director of Training and Marketing Strategies for Burlington Capital Properties, exemplifies that mission through both his work within the firm and his influence across the multifamily sector.
As a proud Veteran of the United States Air Force and more than 37 years of experience in the apartment industry, John brings a deep and well-rounded perspective to training, marketing, and operations. In recent years, he has become a recognized voice on one of the industry’s most important and evolving topics: mental health in multifamily housing.
John is a frequent speaker at major national and regional conferences, including the NAA Apartmentalize Conference, Texas Apartment Association ONE Conference, Florida Apartment Association INSPIRE Conference, South Carolina Apartment Association Education Conference, the Washington State EdCon, and numerous local association events. While his work in mental health has gained significant traction, his expertise also extends to leasing and marketing, where he continues to equip teams with practical, results-driven strategies. Across all platforms, John delivers a consistent and impactful message, combining real-world insight with actionable tools and open dialogue.
His leadership in this space extends well beyond the stage. John is a National Apartment Association Education Institute Faculty Member and a recognized Subject Matter Expert, contributing to the revision of both the Certified Apartment Manager (CAM) and Certified Apartment Leasing Professional (CALP) designation course materials. He also serves as an instructor for both programs, helping to shape the next generation of industry professionals.
John remains actively engaged in advancing the industry at a national level. Through his involvement with the National Apartment Association, he participates annually in Advocate in Washington, D.C., meeting with lawmakers to support and influence policy on issues critical to the industry. As a result of these efforts, Fairview Cove, a community under management, has hosted congressional staff to provide firsthand perspective on the challenges surrounding affordable housing.
He serves on multiple national committees through the National Apartment Association Education Institute, including the NAAEI Program Administration and Curriculum Development Committee, the NAA Membership Committee, NAA Voices Committee, and the NAA Operations Committee, where he chaired the inaugural Mental Health Subcommittee. He also serves on the Bay Area Apartment Association Board of Directors.
As a certified Mental Health First Aider and Mental Health First Aid Instructor, John is helping integrate mental health education into the foundation of professional development across the industry, while expanding awareness and access by certifying additional Mental Health First Aiders.
John’s work reflects a broader commitment to not only strengthening performance within multifamily housing but also supporting the people who make it possible.
